s those who follow their rulings and findings know, the supreme court of the land retains their narrow right wing majority. Ten days ago they inflicted, with a 5-4 ruling, that corporations and unions have the same constitutional right as individuals to fund federal campaigns, just as long as they do so independently of campaigns' own campaign organizations. The court has simply, with a one vote majority, swept aside a century of precedent. The court has tilted the system decisively in favor of corporate interests. Any corporation is now capable of spending enormously to defeat a candidate who doesn't support its political agenda. The ruling might well diminish the clout of political parties, which remain subject to strict limits, and increase spending by issue-advocacy interests. |
